PROMESSION – WHAT IF SOMEONE DIES IN SPACE?
Death and Burial in Space: Exploring Ecological Alternatives
Death is an inevitable part of human life. Across cultures and religions, there exist various customs and rituals for burial. While on Earth, these practices can be performed according to individual traditions. However, my concern lies with the question: if someone dies in space, how should they be buried properly and respectfully?
Swedish biologist Susanne Wiigh-Mäsak has introduced an innovative form of ecological burial called Promession.
Promession involves placing the corpse in a coffin, then freezing it to minus 18 degrees Celsius, followed by submersion in liquid nitrogen. This process makes the body extremely fragile, allowing vibrations of a specific amplitude to disintegrate it into organic powder. Subsequently, these particles are placed in a vacuum chamber where the water content evaporates, leaving behind a dry powder.
Legality of Promession: This method is legally recognized in Sweden and Scotland.
Moreover, the constitution has enshrined the Right to Environment as a fundamental right. This mandates that all activities—whether conducted by private individuals or the government—must be carried out in harmony with environmental protection.
Conclusion: With respect for India’s diverse cultural, traditional, and religious burial practices, I firmly believe that comprehensive guidelines should be formulated to implement alternative, eco-friendly burial methods. As responsible citizens, it is our duty to protect not only our terrestrial environment but also outer space.
Curiosity:
What other eco-friendly modes of cremation or burial could be feasible in space?
If your curiosity is keeping you awake and you would like me to answer any questions, please feel free to comment.

ReplyDeleteWell written honey
ReplyDeleteI think article proper headline should be "what to do when someone die" because I didn't see any space situation here. But good work and great article about how we can prevent pollutions caused by dead bodies.
ReplyDeleteI wrote that headline so that my audience can relate this method with any death occurs mainly in space, and I believe every person knows that there is no gravity in space so we cannot perform our traditional burial methods... in respect of this article my duty is to write regarding space, law and our duties. But thank you for your suggestion
DeleteIn respect of your suggested headline, answer is quite obvious in respect of earth, Traditional methods of burial will only be opted.
