Humanity is on the brink of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, also known as Industry 4.0. Unlike the previous industrial revolutions—the steam engine, the era of science and mass production, and the age of digitalization—this new revolution directly challenges the very framework of human existence.

Meaning of the Fourth Industrial Revolution

The Fourth Industrial Revolution represents a pioneering transformation in the way we live and work, largely driven by internet-based systems, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and the Internet of Things (IoT). Once advanced technologies are fully integrated into our factories, workplaces, and machines, a radical shift in production systems and work modalities is expected.

While Industry 4.0 is often seen as an extension of digitalization, its speedscope, and impact on traditional systems set it apart, making it a revolution of its own kind. This transformation is disrupting industries worldwide in an uneven but profoundly rapid manner, significantly altering the global economic and industrial landscape.

Potential Benefits of Industry 4.0

In fact, Industry 4.0 holds the potential to significantly enhance the standard of living and raise income levels. Developed nations are already reaping the benefits of cutting-edge services and technologies that allow individuals to book cabs, purchase tickets, or access banking services within seconds from their devices.

With the collaborative working of humans and intelligent machines, productivity and efficiency are expected to skyrocket. There is even the possibility that advanced technologies could help us predict natural disasters like earthquakes, meteor impacts, or tsunamis with remarkable accuracy—thus allowing sufficient time for preventive or protective measures.

Threats and Concerns in the Era of Industry 4.0

In 2015, more than 1,000 AI and robotics researchers, including Stephen Hawking and Elon Musk, issued a global warning regarding the potential destruction that AI warfare and autonomous weapons could bring. This gave rise to several pressing legal and ethical questions, one of which is:

What if an AI entity commits an offence punishable by capital punishment, imprisonment, or fine?

Capital Punishment:
If an AI system commits a crime warranting capital punishment, then the deletion or permanent disabling of its software could serve as an equivalent to the death penalty.

Imprisonment:
The primary purpose of imprisonment is to restrict the liberty of a human being. A comparable punishment for AI may be to suspend its operations or disconnect it from functioning for a court-determined period.

Fine:
Imposing a fine on an AI entity depends on whether it possesses assets or controls economic value. If not, it could be made to perform labor or services for societal benefit, similar to community service or restitution.

Note: The above interpretations are theoretical and based on personal opinion, as no formal legislation currently exists to address these circumstances.

Human beings must exercise caution and foresight when developing disruptive technologies. A collaborative global approach is essential to analyze how technologies will reshape our social structurescultural normsindustries, and personal lives.

Governments around the world should:

  • Enact robust legislation ensuring technological safety and ethical use.

  • Develop public awareness programs to educate society about future workplaces.

  • Invest in reskilling initiatives, focusing on flexibility, digital literacy, and critical thinking skills to help the workforce adapt to the evolving industrial environment.
